EducationBA in Physics at Bowdoin College 2008, Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa
I've taught seven years of high school physics, during which I've learned another degree's worth of curriculum, pedagogy, and life lessons.
ExperienceHi! My name is Ryan, and Ive been tutoring students in physics and math for over 15 years. I began tutoring officially in high school, when they hired me to work in an after school math program for middle and high school students. In college, I continued with this work, conducting private and group tutoring sessions for college students in their first year of physics.
Since graduation, I've been teaching physics and coaching at two private high schools: I spent five years at a boarding school in northern Massachusetts and two years at a private day school in Richmond, VA. I just moved to State College this summer!
While I have come to love what physics and math can offer in explaining how the world works, I also understand that they can be challenging to learn. Ive been there. It can be super frustrating when you know you're trying, but you still aren't getting it / doing well in the class.
While these topics are hard, they're not impossible. I've spent years thinking about and breaking down difficult topics into pieces that can be more easily understood. I believe it is important to start by building a strong conceptual base, then proceed by applying these ideas to the homework / test problems you need to solve.
I really do enjoy helping students find their footing in these challenging subjects. While I have been able to help students raise their grades in their classes, I've also helped them gain confidence in their abilities as problem solvers and analytical thinkers.
HobbiesI am super excited to be in State College! Im a west coast / New England guy, so this is something new for me. I love being outside and exploring the city. I have enjoyed the food, art and music scene here, and get my fair share of soccer and tennis matches in as well.

Ryan tutored my daughter in Algebra II and did an excellent job. Jackie's grades continued to improve through the winter into spring and she was one of only three students in her class who passed the SOL. He even helped Jackie with a pre-calculus class which she took this summer. Ryan is professional and highly knowledgeable in both math and science and it is obvious that he enjoys both these subjects. I highly recommend him as a tutor in Algebra II or any high-level math course and we plan to have him as a physics tutor this fall.
