Shannon P.
Private tutor in State College, PA
Education
BS in Chemistry and minor in Mathematics - University of Nevada, Reno; pursuing a MS in Forensic Science - Pennsylvania State University
Experience
I have been a chemistry and calculus private tutor on and off for 3 years now and worked as a chemistry lab TA at UNR. Out of those I have tutored/taught, I have received positive feedback. While my intentions are not to enter the education field, I enjoy working with other young adults one-on-one. I love helping people with their chemistry or math needs, and hope to turn any frustration into relief, showing others that math and science isn't as complicated as they might think. I believe, for the success of a student, that understanding is exponential more valuable than the ability to memorize. Even if it might take slightly longer, I am a proponent of the process of identifying and discussing mistakes before trying to fix them. Often times, I find that locating the source of a mistake and talking about it helps to solve similar problems in the future.

Hobbies
Aside from my studies, I also love being outdoors and running; I competed on the cross country and track and field teams at UNR. Additionally, for much of my life I have been a musician, playing trumpet in high school bands and in my local youth orchestra, and an artist. One of the challenges I welcome as a tutor is finding unique ways to explain things to people--my background in art helps me find creative ways to help people better understand various math or science concepts.
